Almost every folding knife has a lock that keeps the blade open while you cut. The four most common knife lock types are the liner lock, frame lock, crossbar lock, and lockback. Each one holds the blade in place, but they differ in weight and ease of closing.

A liner lock knife is the most popular mechanism on the market and the one we chose for The Montana, MKC’s first folding knife. I spent 30 years building custom liner locks by hand and picked this mechanism for a reason: it’s proven, lightweight, and offers smooth one-handed closing.

Here’s how each lock type works, what makes them different, and which one fits your carry best.

What a Knife Lock Does and Why It Matters

A knife lock holds the blade in the open position so it can’t fold back on your fingers during use. That’s the whole job. Without a reliable lock, a folding knife becomes a liability instead of a tool.

The lock determines how you close the knife, too. Some mechanisms let you fold the blade with one hand in a single motion. Others require a grip change or two hands to disengage.

Most modern folding knives use one of four types of knife locks: liner lock, frame lock, crossbar lock, or lockback. They all keep the blade open. The differences show up in how they feel, how they handle dirt, and how they wear over years of daily carry.

Liner Lock: The Proven EDC Favorite

The liner lock is the most widely used mechanism in modern folding knives. Michael Walker invented the current version in the early 1980s, and knife makers adopted it quickly. Decades later, it’s still the go-to for everyday carry.

How it works: A thin metal liner sits inside the handle, spring-loaded against the scale. When you open the blade, that liner flexes inward and clicks behind the blade’s tang, locking it open. To close, push the liner to the side with your thumb and fold the blade back into the handle.

The liner lock’s biggest advantage for everyday carriers is weight. The liner is a thin strip of hardened steel, so it doesn’t add bulk. Liner lock knives run lighter and slimmer than frame lock or crossbar lock designs, which matters when you’re pocketing a knife all day.

One-handed closing is smooth and intuitive. The liner lock’s simple mechanism is part of why I chose it for The Montana. My custom liner locks have always offered the best balance of clean operation and everyday usability.

No one holds a patent on the liner lock design. It’s an open, IP-free mechanism that any knife maker can build on and improve.

We took that proven design and engineered The Montana’s liners to run two to four points harder than the industry standard. They extend the full length of the handle and are designed to minimize unwanted bending loads through the lock bar.

The result is a 2.84-ounce liner lock knife with MagnaCut steel, G10 handles, and a lockup that gets more secure under pressure, not less.

Best for: Everyday carry, lightweight folders, and anyone who values smooth, ambidextrous one-handed operation.

Frame Lock: Built Into the Handle

The frame lock works the same way as a liner lock, with one key difference. Instead of a separate liner inside the handle, the lock bar is machined directly from the handle frame itself. Chris Reeve invented this design and named it the Reeve Integral Lock (RIL).

How it works: One side of the handle, usually titanium or thick stainless steel, flexes inward when the blade opens. That section clicks behind the tang and locks the blade. To close, push the frame to the side with your thumb, then fold the blade.

The frame lock’s lock bar is thicker than a standard liner, with a wider contact area against the blade tang. You’ll find frame locks on many higher-end folding knives, and the titanium handles common in frame lock designs add a solid, premium feel.

The trade-off is weight. Titanium handles are heavier than G10 or other composite scales paired with a liner lock.

Like the liner lock, the frame lock is a right-handed design. You disengage the lock from one side of the knife, and the thicker titanium bar requires more force to push aside than a liner lock’s thinner steel bar.

Titanium-on-steel contact at the lock face wears over time. Premium frame lock knives address this with a hardened steel lock bar insert, but lower-priced models skip that part and wear faster as a result.

Best for: All-day carry, premium knife builds, and carriers who prefer a substantial lockup feel and don’t mind extra pocket weight.

Crossbar Lock: Fingers-Free Closing

The crossbar lock uses a spring-loaded bar that slides along a track inside the handle, wedging between the blade tang and the frame to keep the blade open. Bill McHenry and Jason Williams invented this mechanism in the 1990s, and Benchmade later marketed it under their trademarked name.

How it works: An omega spring, a small coiled wire, pushes a crossbar upward into a notch behind the blade tang. That bar holds the blade open. To close, pinch the crossbar from either side and pull it back, releasing the blade to fold shut.

The crossbar lock’s biggest draw is your fingers never enter the blade’s path during closing. You pinch the bar from the side, the blade swings free, and your hand stays clear. It’s fully ambidextrous, since you can operate it identically from either side.

The original patent expired in 2018, so knife makers across the industry now build their own crossbar lock versions. Hogue, SOG, Kershaw, and others all offer crossbar-style designs under different brand names.

The downside is the omega spring. It’s a wear part that can fatigue or break over time. Replacements are inexpensive and easy to install, but it’s still a maintenance step that liner locks and frame locks don’t require.

Dirt in the crossbar track can affect smooth operation if you don’t keep the mechanism clean.

Best for: Ambidextrous operation, fidget-friendly carry, and anyone who wants fingers completely clear of the blade during closing.

Lockback: The Traditional Choice

The lockback predates every other mechanism on this list. It’s the classic folding knife lock, most closely associated with Buck Knives and their iconic Model 110.

How it works: A spring-loaded bar runs along the spine of the knife. When the blade opens fully, the bar drops into a notch on the blade’s tang and locks it in place. To close, press down on the release at the back of the handle (the “kick”), which lifts the bar and lets the blade fold shut.

Lockbacks are dependable and secure. The release sits on the spine, far from your cutting grip, so accidental disengagement during use is rare. Your fingers stay out of the blade’s path during closing, too.

The lockback’s limitation is one-handed closing. Folding a lockback with one hand requires shifting your grip or pressing the release against your body, which isn’t intuitive. Most lockback carriers close their knife with two hands.

Lockbacks are ambidextrous by default since the release is centered on the spine. They’ve been around for generations, and they work. For carriers who prioritize dependability over speed of closing, a lockback is a solid pick.

Best for: Traditional folder fans, two-handed operation, and situations where accidental lock release needs to be kept to a minimum.

Which Knife Lock Type Is Right for You?

For most people carrying a folding knife every day, a liner lock is the best fit. It’s light, it’s slim, and decades of refinement have made it one of the most reliable mechanisms available.

A frame lock knife is a solid option for premium builds. The thicker lock bar and titanium construction give you a more substantial feel in hand, which appeals to carriers who prefer a weightier, more planted grip.

Crossbar locks are the fidgeter’s favorite and the safest option for keeping fingers clear of the blade. If truly ambidextrous closing is your top priority and you’re comfortable with occasional spring maintenance, a crossbar lock is worth a look.

Lockbacks are proven and simple. If you grew up carrying a Buck and you’re comfortable with two-handed closing, a lockback knife won’t let you down.

The real answer? Build quality matters more than lock type. A well-made liner lock knife outperforms a poorly built frame lock every time. Buy from a knife maker who gets the tolerances right, and the lock will do its job for years.
