Years ago, Josh Smith bought back one of his favorite custom knives he'd previously sold to a collector. It still hangs in his office. A double recurve with Damascus steel blade and bolsters, fossilized woolly mammoth ivory, and 18 karat gold pins.

The Pocket Aces began from that knife. We kept its shape and carved tail, but swapped the ivory and Damascus for carbon fiber, fluted titanium, and MagnaCut. Then we shaped the handle and fitted the bolsters until it met the same high standards as Josh's custom work.

A year ago, we couldn't have built this knife for production. And now that we can, we're only building it once.

Each Pocket Aces is heat-treated and carries Josh's custom mark on one side of the blade and the MKC logo on the other. This knife is a collector's piece, but like every one of our knives it's built as a tool to be used and passed down.

The name comes from Old West lore about high stakes card players who had to turn in their guns when they came into town... but kept a knife like this tucked in a sleeve or vest.

THE DOUBLE RECURVE REMAINS UNCHANGED

The double recurve profile and carved tail come straight from the original.

Josh knew the materials would have to change, but he wanted the shape kept exactly. We matched the profile to his original and carved the tail to echo the file work he did by hand. The Pocket Aces isn't a replica as much as it is a tribute to the one-of-a-kind custom blades Josh built his reputation on, years before MKC ever existed.

A STEP UP FROM COMPOSITE

Fluted titanium bolsters and a museum-fit carbon fiber handle.

Ironwood was the first plan, but it would have been too brittle through the thin bridge under the handle. We went to carbon fiber and titanium instead, and milled the bolsters with the same fluting Josh put on his custom folders. The carbon fiber sits flush against them with no visible gap. That fit was the hardest detail on this knife to get right.

A CUSTOM FEEL FROM OUR SHOP

A thin center section, surfaced to match the original.

Josh ground the center section of his original by hand until it sat smooth in the web of his hand. We matched that feel digitally, surfacing the production model until its ergonomics lined up. A thicker center gets stronger fast but digs in, so we kept it as thin as we could without letting it bend.

HEAT TREATED TO WORK

MagnaCut steel, treated like a tool headed for the field.

Josh heat treated every custom he made as if it was going into the field, even the ones he expected to be showpieces. One high-end custom in this style went to a man who carried it to work every day. The Pocket Aces gets the same treatment in MagnaCut, with the toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance to hold up if yours gets carried. LEATHER SHEATH AND CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY

Each Pocket Aces comes with a leather slip sheath and a certificate of authenticity card.

Keep the card with the knife. Knockoffs of our knives turn up constantly, and that card is how a future owner will know they're holding the real thing.
